['dʒeɪmztaʊn], nationale historische Gedenkstätte in Virginia, USA, auf Jamestown Island im Ästuar des James River; bildet seit 1936 zusammen mit Williamsburg und Yorktown den Colonial National Historical Park. - Jamestown wurde im Mai 1607 durch eine von der Virginia Company entsandte Expedition unter Führung von J. Smith als erste englische Dauersiedlung in Nordamerika gegründet (ursprünglich rd. 105 Siedler, darunter auch einige deutsche) und nach König Jakob (James I.) benannt. Es war Ausgangspunkt und die erste Hauptstadt der Kolonie Virginia, deren erstes Abgeordnetenhaus hier 1619 zusammentrat. Die zunächst weitgehend friedlichen Beziehungen der Kolonisten zu den ansässigen Indianern (Algonkin-Bund unter Häuptling Powhatan, dessen Tochter Pocahontas eine zentrale Rolle spielte) schlugen später in kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen um (1622, 44). Nach der Verlegung des Regierungssitzes nach Williamsburg 1699 verfiel der Ort.
